The Federal State Budgetary Institution "N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is one of Russia's largest federal scientific and medical centers, providing specialized, including high-tech, medical care at world standards. The Institute of Oncology was established in Leningrad on March 15, 1927. In 2017, the institution received the status of a National Medical Research Center of Oncology and is currently considered one of the oldest medical institutions in the Northwest. The center proudly bears the name of its founder, the pioneer of Russian oncology, Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov. Over the years, a unique Russian scientific school has developed here, producing world-renowned scientists such as S.A. Kholdin, L.M. Shabad, A.I. Rakov, A.I. Serebrov, N.P. Napalkov, M.L. The institution's structure includes 17 research units, 20 clinical departments, 16 auxiliary clinical departments, and 3 outpatient diagnostic departments.
The center's staff includes over 1,100 employees, including leading oncology specialists: corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctors and Candidates of Medical Sciences, and physicians of the highest professional category.

The main focus of the scientific and practical work at the National Medical Research Center of Oncology is the study of the etiology and pathogenesis of carcinogenesis mechanisms, as well as the development of methods for prevention, diagnosis, surgical, radiation, drug, combined, and complex treatment of malignant tumors in adults and children.
The Center's clinical units provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient treatment for patients with oncological diseases and benign neoplasms, as well as dynamic monitoring of patients in the "oncological risk" group. Approximately 100,000 patients from various regions of Russia and CIS countries receive inpatient and consultative-diagnostic care annually.
The Center conducts educational activities through postgraduate and residency programs, as well as additional professional education. More than 400 doctors from Russia and other countries study here annually. The N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology serves as a clinical and scientific base for oncology departments of Saint Petersburg's higher education institutions.
