The Institute is a federal state institution directly reporting to the Ministry of Health. It is the only lead institute for this field in Saint Petersburg.
The primary objective of the institute is to provide highly qualified and high-tech specialized medical care for diseases of the ear, pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses, as well as for speech pathology.
The Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in this field. It also carries out methodological work and professional development for otorhinolaryngologists and speech therapists both in Saint Petersburg and throughout the country.
- The Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech is the oldest mono-profile research institution in the field of otorhinolaryngology in Russia and the world (founded in 1930). It is ranked among the 17 leading otorhinolaryngology centers globally.
- Under the right of operational management, it possesses its own building with a bed capacity, an outpatient clinic, scientific and clinical laboratories, a unique complex of otorhinolaryngological operating rooms, and specialized radiation diagnostics for head and neck organs, including MRI and CT.
- It is the only specialized research institution in the Russian Ministry of Health system that simultaneously addresses problems of otorhinolaryngology and speech pathology. This has enabled the creation of a rehabilitation system for patients after cochlear implantation that has no professional analogues in Russia. In terms of the number of cochlear implantations and the volume of postoperative patient rehabilitation, the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech ranks first in Russia and third in Europe.
- For the past 20 years, the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech has headed the Russian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists and its successor, the National Medical Association of Otorhinolaryngologists of Russia; all conferences and congresses of this association in Russia are organized under its leadership. The Institute publishes the journal "Russian Otorhinolaryngology," which is the official organ of the Russian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists and is accredited by the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC of Russia).
- The St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech performs unique fundamental scientific research in the field of otorhinolaryngology, including the study of autonomic innervation, the mucociliary clearance system of the upper respiratory tract, and the study of cytokine activity during inflammatory processes.
- The Institute has an experienced staff of clinicians and researchers, including 19 Doctors of Medical Sciences and 45 Candidates of Medical Sciences in the specialty, conducting research in all areas of otorhinolaryngology; it has its own Dissertation Council, formed mainly from the Institute's staff.
- The St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech participates in the creation of a unique domestic cochlear implant.
- The Institute is engaged in individual specialized training of otorhinolaryngological personnel in high-tech care for leading otorhinolaryngological hospitals in Russia.
