General information

The laboratory's research focus is medical biotechnology. Scientists study proteolytic enzymes involved in cell death and inflammation. New anti-inflammatory drugs are being developed based on these research results.

Project Title: Search for small-molecule inhibitors of key proteases responsible for the processing and activation of IL-36 cytokines during inflammation
Goals and Objectives

Research area: Biotechnology

Project Goal: Study of IL-36 proteins, identification of small-molecule inhibitors of proteases involved in IL-36 activation processing as a potential therapy for inflammatory diseases, evaluation of the effectiveness of the resulting inhibitors in mouse models of psoriasis, and development of drugs for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases
Practical significance of the research

Scientific Results

  • Studies were conducted on the activity of low-molecular-weight IL-36 proteolysis inhibitors on cell cultures.
  • A set of optimized inhibitors was developed.
  • Studies were conducted on the activity of low-molecular-weight inhibitors in animal models of psoriasis.
  • New data were obtained on the activation of recombinant IL-36 interleukins by caspase-3, confirming the hypothesis that IL-36 proteins can be selectively activated through internal proteolytic processing.
  • A set of inhibitors was identified that effectively suppress the proteolysis of synthetic substrates and IL-36 signaling in a cellular system.
Implementation of research results:
A methodology for obtaining degranulate and an in vitro test based on it was created. The methodology has found practical application at the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy.

Organizational and infrastructural transformations:
The "Medical Biotechnology" Research and Education Center has been established.

Education and personnel retraining

  • Defenses: 4 PhD dissertations.
  • Lecture courses for bachelor's and master's students in biotechnology have been prepared.
  • Internships for undergraduate and graduate students have been conducted at the Laboratory.
  • Leading scientist Seamus Martin is a co-author of the 11th, 12th, and 13th editions of the core immunology textbook "Essential Immunology."

Cooperation

  • Trinity College (Ireland): joint research, student exchanges, organization of seminars and conferences
  • University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy): student exchanges, organization of seminars and conferences
  • St. Petersburg Institute of Pharmacy CJSC (Russia), Research Institute of Hygiene, Occupational Pathology and Human Ecology (RIHOPHE) of the FMBA of Russia (Russia), S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy (Russia): joint research
