Project Goal: Study of the molecular mechanisms of the origin and development of neurodegenerative diseases, search for ways to combat disorders occurring in the functioning of neurons that lead to neurodegenerative diseases
Scientific Results
- Prototypes of drugs against neurodegenerative diseases that normalize calcium concentration in neurons have been identified. Research on potential drugs against Alzheimer's disease has moved to the preclinical stage.
- A promising chemical compound has been identified for the future development of a therapeutic agent for spinocerebellar ataxia type 2.
- A methodology for monitoring the functional activity of nerve cells has been developed, allowing for the tracking of individual neurons both in cell culture and in vivo.
- New mechanisms responsible for age-related changes in calcium signaling have been discovered in neurons of transgenic mice with disease-modeling conditions.
- Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and spinocerebellar ataxia type 2.
Implementation of research results
- A patent for an invention has been obtained: "Use of piperazine derivatives for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's-type dementias with impaired intracellular calcium signaling."
- Studies of calcium signaling in neurons provide the opportunity to identify specific targets for creating new drugs against neurodegenerative diseases. Accordingly, obtaining drugs capable of normalizing calcium homeostasis in nerve cells is of high interest to the global pharmaceutical industry.
Organizational and infrastructural transformations
The laboratory is fully integrated into the educational structure of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
Education and personnel retraining
- The "Neurobiological Engineering" master's program has been launched at the laboratory.
- Defenses: 1 doctoral dissertation, 5 candidate dissertations, 11 bachelor's and master's graduation theses.
