The SMTU Engineering Development Center fulfills orders for the development of design documentation and conducts engineering, research, and development (R&D) work for the production of critical components.
About the Center
The SMTU Engineering Development Center is organized in Saint Petersburg based on a cluster principle and is distributed across several SMTU buildings to ensure optimal logistics and scientific-technical personnel workload.
The establishment of the Engineering Development Center at SMTU has been a timely and important step in meeting the modern needs of industry and Russia's development. The Center will increase R&D volumes in the application of innovative technologies for import substitution by providing modern technological equipment.
The Center's activities are aimed at the transition to clean and resource-saving energy; increasing the efficiency of extraction and deep processing of hydrocarbon raw materials; developing new sources, methods of transportation, and energy storage; increasing the security of protected facilities; and R&D for the creation of new or modified materials.

The priority areas of the Engineering Center's activities are:

The selection of these activity areas is determined by the tasks of the regional shipbuilding cluster — enterprises within JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation — and the university's partnership with companies in the MariNet and TechNet communities of the National Technology Initiative located both within and outside the region, consortia, and results of meetings with relevant associations and R&D customers.
Commercial activities and services offered
Commercial customers for the Center's products and services include companies involved in the development and implementation of innovative products, digital platforms for creating 3D additive structures, research into consumer and functional properties of designed products in a virtual environment, management of digital platforms and intelligent control systems, and the creation of new equipment and parts for the shipbuilding industry — a wide range of industrial customers.
An important condition for implementing the set tasks is joint work with the
SMTU Technology Transfer Center:
- design development of prototypes and rational product packaging systems, research into the consumer and functional properties of the designed product in a virtual environment, and testing of consumer properties on a physical demonstration model;
- performing calculations using modern computational fluid dynamics methods, including the OpenFOAM package;
- software-aided design of propellers and propulsion systems;
- placement of technology proposals on specialized "open innovation" platforms, formation of investment attraction plans;
- preparation of technical and commercial proposals and marketing research for high-tech products and services;
- development and practical application of digital navigation standards;
- development of digital navigation and design for innovative shipbuilding;
- collection and processing of big data to develop optimal solutions for educational digital technology platforms;
- use of intelligent control systems to ensure autonomous operation of interconnected technical objects;
- work in the field of marine electronic control systems, research, and development;
- R&D for organizing the production of components and systems;
- creation of a software and hardware complex for virtual and hybrid testing grounds for marine-based robotic systems and vehicles;
