The Preclinical Research Laboratory Testing Center (hereinafter PRLTC) is a permanent functional executive body of the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation; it was established to carry out applied R&D and exploratory work, the results of which are necessary for the development and registration of medicines in the Russian Federation and for obtaining permission to conduct clinical trials.p> The objects of preclinical (non-clinical) studies are test substances, medicines and (or) substances contained in medicinal products, vaccines, immunobiological preparations, pharmacological substances, pharmacological agents, pharmaceutical substances, and medicinal products and preparations. Experimental studies with influenza viruses and other respiratory infections are conducted under license No. 78.01.10.001.L.000071.05.11 dated May 13, 2011.

Main areas of activity

  • exploratory research and development (R&D), including primary analysis of research objects based on scientific literature and in silico data, solubility assessment, in vitro testing in cell cultures, determination of cytotoxic and maximum tolerated concentrations, protective properties, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activity; selection of promising candidates and assessment of the spectrum of action regarding the studied types of activity;
  • conducting R&D on modeling pathological processes, conditions, and diseases in animals to evaluate specific pharmacological activity in vivo. Reproduction of conditions equivalent in etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical presentation to human diseases on various test systems, selection and study of drug efficacy and safety under such conditions to modernize existing and create new pharmacotherapy regimens for relevant diseases;
  • conducting R&D on secondary pharmacodynamics (in vitro, in vivo). Includes searching for other effects and drug interactions with inhibitors and inducers of transport and metabolic systems of cells and organs in drugs with an established mechanism of action, and pharmacodynamics (study of potentiation, synergism, additive, and antagonistic interactions);
  • study of dosage levels and drug administration regimens during toxicological preclinical trials;
  • general toxicity studies of drugs (in vivo). Includes acute toxicity studies (single dose) and calculation of toxicometric parameters, accumulation; subchronic and chronic toxicity studies (multiple doses) of drugs;
  • pharmacological safety studies;
  • studies of specific types of toxicity (in vivo). Includes studies of immunotoxicity and allergenic properties, reproductive toxicity;
  • new line of work: assessment of antibacterial and antifungal activity of substances of various natures. Conducting in vitro and in vivo studies on models of bacterial sepsis and combined viral-bacterial pneumonia.
